Gift of Cash

A gift of cash is the simplest form of gift, and is fully tax-deductible for purposes of federal and state income tax calculations. A gift of cash can be made via check or credit card.

Gift of Securities

SPRI accepts a gift of marketable securities that are traded on the NYSE, ASE, NASDAQ and other major U.S. stock exchanges. A gift of securities is usually sold immediately on receipt by SPRI. The dollar value of a gift of securities is the mean (average) of the high and low of the stock(s) or bond(s) on the date that the transfer to SPRI is executed by the donor.

Gift of Real Property

SPRI will consider a gift of real property after first exercising due diligence to assess the property’s title status, environmental issues, and marketability. SPRI reserves the right to dispose of the donated real property as soon as it becomes the legal owner. It is SPRI’s general practice to sell all gifts of real property as soon as possible. A donor of a gift of real property is entitled to a tax deduction equivalent to the appraised value of the property at the time of the transfer to SPRI.

Gift of Tangible Personal Property

SPRI will accept gifts of jewelry, artwork, collections, and other personal property so long as the property has a value of $5,000 or more and is approved by SPRI’s Chief Financial Officer. However, property believed to have a value of $5,000 or more must first be subject to a qualified appraisal under the terms of the Internal Revenue governing gifts of this type.

For answers to questions or to make a non-cash gift of securities, please contact the SPRI Development Office.

Gift Via Bequest

A charitable bequest is the most popular and enduring type of planned gift. A bequest is favored by donors because it is a gift-planning strategy that gives one the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy while retaining full use of one’s assets during life. With a bequest, there is no disruption of one’s lifestyle and no immediate out-of-pocket expense.

For more information or assistance with bequest language, please contact the SPRI Development Office. In all cases, you should be sure to consult your financial and tax advisors when considering a bequest or any other type of planned gift.

Gift of a Life Income Plan

SPRI encourages donors to include the Institute irrevocably as a charitable beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust administered by parties other than SPRI. (As a general rule, SPRI will not serve as a trustee of any charitable remainder trust.) SPRI does not currently offer a Pooled Income Fund, and it does not currently possess a license to issue charitable gift annuities.

A donor may name SPRI as a recipient of payments from a charitable lead trust, which provides an income payment to the Institute at a designated rate for the donor’s life or over a pre-established number of years.

A donor may name SPRI to receive all or a portion of the benefits of a life insurance policy which he/she has purchased on his/her life. New or existing policies may be donated outright, or SPRI may be named the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy.

SPRI will not accept a gift of cash from a donor for the purpose of purchasing life insurance on the donor’s life.
