Thank you for joining us at “The Science of Regenerative Medicine.” Below, you will find the bios of our speakers as well as their presentations from the event.

As you know, The Steadman Clinic and SPRI are located in Colorado—a destination orthopaedic practice and scientific research institute. As such, the state of Florida is important to our organizations; we welcome nearly 400 patients from Florida each year, and over 300 of SPRI’s donors reside in Florida. A home away from home for The Steadman Clinic and SPRI, Florida is a wonderful destination for us to share our scientific research.

Bringing SPRI to you allowed us to share about our research in Vail and Aspen, and how that science translates to our patients. The Steadman Clinic and SPRI meet at the intersection of science and medicine, where the research performed at SPRI is enhanced by patient data at The Steadman Clinic and the discoveries made at SPRI are brought into clinical practice. Patients of The Steadman Clinic benefit from innovative technology and treatments backed in research. Our differentiating organizations lead to an unparalleled patient experience.
 

Welcome Address: Marc J. Philippon, MD and Dan Drawbaugh

Marc J. Philippon, MD

Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic and Chair of SPRI, Dr. Marc Philippon is known as one of the world’s leading orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Philippon joined The Steadman Clinic in 2005 from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) where he served as Director of Sports Medicine/Hip Disorders and Director of Sports Medicine/Hip Disorders Fellowship. Dr. Philippon is recognized by his peers in U.S. News and World Report for being among the top 1% in the nation in his specialty. Dr. Philippon is internationally known for performing joint preservation techniques utilizing arthroscopic hip surgery to treat painful joint injury in high-level athletes. He has treated close to 1,000 professional and Olympic athletes successfully and serves as a Trustee with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation. He is a frequent invited speaker at national and international sports medicine and orthopaedic meetings and has authored many peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has performed surgery in 15 different countries and has won numerous awards, including the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Vinci Sports Health Award and the 2023 Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Clinical Research Award.
 

Dan Drawbaugh

Dan Drawbaugh is the Chief Executive Officer of The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) in Vail, Colorado. As CEO, Drawbaugh leads a team of talented physicians, scientists, researchers, administrators, board members and partners who make The Steadman Clinic and SPRI one of the most sought-after orthopaedic sports medicine destinations and research centers worldwide. Drawbaugh’s expertise in the healthcare world has enabled him to make many strategic growth initiatives at The Steadman Clinic and SPRI, including establishing a new, state-of-the-art regenerative and translational medicine program and recruiting top surgeons and scientists to join the organizations. Prior to joining The Steadman Clinic and SPRI in 2015, Drawbaugh spent 31 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he held the role of Chief Information Officer and other positions.

Johnny Huard, PhD

Dr. Huard is the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and Director of the Center for Regenerative & Personalized Medicine (CRPM) at Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) in Vail, Colorado. Dr. Huard is a world-renowned stem cell biology expert and his research team pioneered the isolation and characterization of muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs), and has developed gene therapy and tissue engineering strategies to repair a variety of disease conditions utilizing these cells. Dr. Huard is also a leader in the fields of musculoskeletal repair, healthy aging research and stem-cell-based interventions to extend healthspan. His scientific work has culminated in high-impact journals, such as Nature, Science, and Cell Stem Cell with over 430 peer-reviewed publications with Google Scholar Citations: 46017; h-index:113, i10-index: 377. The Huard lab focuses on four different categories that include Biologics, Regenerative Medicine approaches, Therapeutics (FDA-approved anti-fibrotic and senolytic agents); and Animal Modeling. Dr. Huard’s laboratory is highly funded with NIH grants, DoD contracts, DoD/NIH-sponsored clinical trials and philanthropic funding. Dr. Huard’s research received over 90 honors and awards, including the AOSSM Cabaud Memorial and 3M Award, numerous ORS NIRA awards, AAOS Kappa Delta awards (2004, 2018), Orthoregeneration award, Honorary Doctorate Degree (University of Rimouski) and many others.

Patricia Hardenbergh, MD

Dr. Hardenbergh is a radiation oncologist, the Medical Director of the award-winning Shaw Cancer Center in Vail, Colorado and the founder of an innovative grant-funded website focused on education in the field of radiation oncology. Her career has spanned laboratory-based inquiries into radiation effects on killing cancer cells in mice and tissue culture, to human studies looking into the toxic side effects of radiation therapy, to the development of a grant-funded educational website for advancing the practices of radiation oncologists in rural communities. In addition, Dr. Hardenbergh helped invent and pioneer a partial breast brachytherapy device called SAVI, which has treated over 10,000 patients. She served in leadership positions for two prominent radiation oncology societies including ASTRO and the ABR, resulting in receiving a Fellow status and a board position. Dr. Hardenbergh plays a vital role in a collaborative research project that combines translational science, radiographical endpoints and clinical expertise in breast cancer with Vail Health, Steadman Philippon Research Institute and The Steadman Clinic, furthering the study of the damaging side effects of fibrosis both after orthopaedic surgery and radiation therapy.

Jared T. Lee, MD

Dr. Jared Lee has studied and practiced orthopaedic medicine all over the world. He earned his fellowship in advanced orthopaedic sports medicine at The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in 2013. Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Lee completed his residency in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, serving as Administrative Chief Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. He attended the University of Washington for medical school. Dr. Lee played collegiate football at Brigham Young University, where he acted as team captain for the 2000 season. He graduated magna cum laude from BYU in 2001 and was honored as one of six Division I college football players to receive the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame post-graduate scholarships. He played in the NFL as a free agent for the Cincinnati Bengals. Dr. Lee’s sports background and passion for medicine make him uniquely adept as a sports medicine physician. He is dedicated to providing all of his patients with unparalleled care.

Raymond H. Kim, MD

Committed to providing patients with surgical expertise and knowledge, Dr. Raymond H. Kim is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction of the knee and hip. Dr. Kim was awarded the prestigious John Insall Award for research on total knee replacements and was named one of the top 22 knee surgeons in the United States by Orthopedics This Week. Dr. Kim received undergraduate degrees in both Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and his medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. He completed his orthopaedic surgery internship and his fellowship at Insall Scott Kelly Orthopaedic Institute in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstruction in New York, New York.

Chelsea S. Bahney, PhD

Dr. Chelsea Bahney is the Program Director for Bone Repair & Regenerative Therapeutics in SPRI’s Center for Regenerative and Personalized Medicine. Dr. Bahney is a respected leader in the fields of tissue engineering and fracture healing. Her high-impact science has been disseminated in over 50 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles or book chapters and she holds over 18 patent/patent applications for her inventions. Her research is funded internally by philanthropy and by competitive external grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), and the orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). In addition to her work at SPRI, Dr. Bahney holds a number of international leadership positions: she is currently the president of the International Society of Fracture Repair; serves on the Global Board for the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) as Treasurer, and is on the AO Foundation Craniomaxiofacial R&D Commission.

Scott Tashman, PhD

Dr. Scott Tashman joined SPRI as the Director of Biomedical Engineering in 2016. After receiving a M.Eng degree in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981, he ran the Gait Analysis Laboratory at Newington Children’s Hospital in Hartford, CT until 1987, where he helped to develop and run one of the first automated, 3D video-motion analysis systems. He earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1992, and then directed the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI from 1992–2006. He also held the position of Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, where he directed the Biodynamics Laboratory and developed advanced imaging systems for musculoskeletal research. Dr. Tashman’s primary areas of expertise are in vivo, dynamic assessment of joint function and musculoskeletal modeling. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health continuously since 1995, as well as by numerous other public and private organizations. He currently has 113 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
