Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Fellowship Program

Steadman Philippon Research Institute offers a one-year Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Fellowship that is held from August 1–July 31. Under the guidance of Co-Directors Drs. Marc J. Philippon and Joel M. Matta, the fellowship provides in-depth training in adolescent and adult hip preservation surgery.

As a world leader in hip arthroscopy technique and innovation, Dr. Philippon has trained many prominent hip arthroscopy surgeons. Dr. Philippon joined The Steadman Clinic in 2005 and serves as Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic and Chair of Steadman Philippon Research Institute, where he also holds Co-Directorships of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Fellowship. Under Dr. Philippon’s mentorship, the fellow will learn the most current hip arthroscopy techniques for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears and chondral damage. The fellow will also come to understand the causes of revision hip arthroscopy and will develop the skills to treat these conditions.

Dr. Matta began a Hip and Pelvis Fellowship in 1990 in Los Angeles. He is recognized internationally for his work in hip surgery relating to trauma, preservation and the anterior approach to arthroplasty. Many surgeons who completed this fellowship are now leaders in hip surgery. Dr. Matta joined The Steadman Clinic in 2017. While the fellow works with Dr. Matta, they will learn to perform periacetabular osteotomies for the treatment of hip dysplasia. The fellow will also focus on primary and revision hip arthroplasty, with an emphasis on the anterior approach.

With an international referral base, The Steadman Clinic is a world-renowned center for the orthopaedic care of professional and recreational athletes. This fellowship will, therefore, provide a high volume of hip arthroscopy, PAO and THA cases. In addition, the fellow will have access to Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI), a leader in the research of musculoskeletal regenerative medicine, biomotion, biomechanics and patient outcomes. SPRI has several NIH grants and DOD contracts, alongside industry, foundation and philanthropic support.

With the rapidly evolving nature of hip surgery, Drs. Philippon and Matta believe the Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for elite-level training in the latest techniques for hip preservation through arthroscopic and open surgery.

Fellowship candidates must have completed a U.S residency in Orthopaedic Surgery, be eligible for a Colorado Medical license and have a strong interest in the area of hip preservation surgery.

Educational Activities

Grand Rounds

  • Internationally and nationally renowned faculty are invited to Vail to present in their realm of expertise at these in-person and virtual didactic and seminar case presentation meetings.

Surgical Skills Laboratory

  • Fellows in a small group setting have the opportunity to do cadaver-based surgical training with core faculty and guest surgical faculty.

Bi-Monthly Journal Club

  • Fellows are assigned topical areas in which a deep dive into the classic literature as well as the cutting-edge and latest evidence-based medicine are reviewed and discussed.

Professional and Others Sports Coverage

  • Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Fellows have the opportunity to participate in providing medical coverage at U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team events. Fellows take 1–2 trips per year where they are fully immersed with the athletes, teams and their medical staff. In these coverage trips, fellows often serve as the main physician either during training or at a national or international competition. This provides tremendous growth and opportunity for the fellow to hone their sports coverage skills through high-end interaction with the athletic trainers and physical therapists and other medical professionals that care for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams. Locations include Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia and China. The amount of coverage varies depending on the Olympic year cycle.
  • Fellows are also highly integrated into the Vail Valley sports community. This includes year-round local events providing sports coverage alongside our athletic trainers and physical therapists. Lastly, the fellows serve as primary consultants to the local high schools in Eagle County, Colorado. This is a robust experience in which you are working closely with the head athletic trainer at two local high schools in the Eagle Valley.
