Hajime Utsunomiya,

PhD

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Hajime joined the Steadman Philippon Research Institute as an International Research Fellow in May 2016. He is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine and has also earned his PhD in medicinal science. His specialty as a researcher focuses on mesenchymal stem cells in the joints.

At SPRI, he conducts animal studies treating articular cartilage injuries using several regeneration technologies such as mesenchymal stem cells from muscle or biological augmentation like PRP under the direction of Johnny Huard, PhD. These studies will improve the brand-new treatments for the patient with severe cartilage damage in knee and hip joints. He also performs the clinical outcome, anatomical and biomechanical studies, many of which focus on hip arthroscopic surgeries with Marc J Philippon, MD. Under the guidance of the pioneer of hip arthroscopy, he researches to pursue the best diagnosis and the best treatment for the patients with hip joint problems.

In his free time, Hajime enjoys sightseeing around the mountains of Colorado with his wife and 3 kids.  A former athlete himself, he enjoys basketball and is looking forward to watching Denver Nuggets' home games next season at the Pepsi Center.
